The essentials

Before you go further

  • Required cover does not automatically mean you must buy the lender’s proposed policy.
  • Compare the premium calculation and policy benefits, not just the first monthly charge.
  • Confirm replacement acceptance and start dates before ending existing cover.

Is credit life insurance compulsory?

A lender may require credit life insurance for a credit agreement; it is not a universal requirement for every loan. The NCR’s June 2024 guideline explains both the lender’s ability to require cover and the consumer’s ability to substitute qualifying cover.

Check the particular product. For example, Absa states that credit life insurance is mandatory for its personal loans. That statement does not establish the conditions at another lender. Fairloan leaves unverified insurance terms marked as unconfirmed.

Find out what the premium is based on

Ask for the premium in rand and the formula behind it. A figure without a basis cannot tell you how the cost will change over the loan term. Use the policy schedule and quotation together, and check whether insurance is already included in the displayed instalment.

The questions below are a comparison checklist, not a claim that every lender offers each calculation method. Where a premium changes with the balance, a fixed monthly estimate will not reproduce the insurer’s full schedule.

Can you replace the lender’s proposed policy?

The NCR guideline says a credit provider must accept a consumer’s replacement policy when it meets the applicable requirements in regulations 3 and 4 of the Credit Life Insurance Regulations. A policy is not automatically suitable merely because it is labelled life insurance.

The guideline also allows substitution after the credit agreement has been entered into, provided the replacement supplies at least the prescribed regulation 3 benefits. Ask the lender what evidence it needs to assess your proposed cover and obtain its response in writing.

Before cancelling existing cover, confirm acceptance, effective dates and how premiums will stop or start. This helps avoid a gap or overlapping payments. The guideline does not establish one premium, cancellation notice period or grace period for every policy.

Read the benefits and exclusions together

Ask for the policy wording and your individual schedule, not only a marketing summary. Use them to check what happens in your circumstances. A label such as unemployment cover does not, on its own, show which types of job loss qualify.

  • Which events are covered and what evidence is needed for a claim?
  • Are there waiting periods, exclusions or limits on how long benefits are paid?
  • How does your employment or income type affect cover?
  • What happens after a missed premium, and is any grace period stated?
  • Who receives a claim and where can a disputed decision be escalated?

Add insurance to the affordability picture

Compare the full instalment after the insurance requirement is clear. Do not enter zero because the premium is missing. Ask for a written figure and check that you have not added it twice.

Fairloan’s calculator can model a fixed monthly insurance amount. It does not price a policy or determine whether replacement cover qualifies. Use the lender’s final quote for the actual repayment schedule.

Common questions

Can I choose my own credit life insurer?

The NCR guideline provides for a qualifying replacement policy, including after the agreement starts. The replacement must meet the applicable requirements. Ask the lender for its assessment process before changing cover.

Does credit life insurance cover every missed instalment?

Do not assume so. Read the insured events, exclusions, waiting periods and benefit limits in your policy. Missing a payment is not, by itself, confirmation of a valid claim.
