Speak to your existing lender early
If repayments are becoming difficult, contact the lender through its official channel and explain what has changed. Ask what support or repayment options are available and how each would affect your balance, costs and credit record. Keep written records of the conversation.
Understand the debt-counselling option
An NCR-registered debt counsellor can explain whether the formal process may be relevant to your situation. Ask about the assessment, fees, restrictions and completion requirements before agreeing. Check the individual counsellor’s details on the NCR register.
Debt counselling and a consolidation loan are different. Read our comparison of the two approaches before you choose a route.
